This four-week course moves past the five fundamental steps of Balboa and will include new moves, techniques, variations, and playing with musicality. Dancers should know basic Balboa (basic, comearound, lollies, throw-out, crossovers).
This four-week series will be chopped full of new moves, techniques, variations, and playing with musicality. We'll go over lines, speed dancing, slow dancing, jumping moves, syncopations, crazy turns, timing, different swing-out styles, how to make up your own moves, and more. Basically, it will tackle "everything you wanted to know about Lindy Hop."
A simple two-hour "Hey, this is Balboa!" workshop where we teach you many of
the basic steps of Balboa so you can enjoy and experience the beautiful 1930's
swing dance. Beginners welcome, bring your friends!
This single workshop is geared for students who have a basic understanding of
Lindy Hop but want to know how to dance to fast music. We'll give you moves,
footwork and techniques that help you do this well, and make your basic dancing
even better. Students should know swingouts, circles, basic 6-count turns and
basic Charleston patterns.
Balboa is a partnered street dance that evolved around the social dance floors in Southern CA. Classic Balboa is done in a very tight closed position with intricate footwork & a distinct, shuffling motion. Bal-swing is related but done in an open position with more movement & a full complement of breaks and turns. While done to all tempos, Balboa is especially well-suited for faster music.
With his partner Jewel McGowan, Dean Collins & the genre of
Lindy he inspired in Southern CA represents a distinct
evolutionary step between the Lindy Hop of Harlem & what would
become West Coast swing. This intermittent step joined
control & intricacy w/ the original energy of Lindy. Dean's
technique of storing& redirecting momentum resulted in a
more efficient, fluid & dynamic lindy.
